International Volunteers Day was celebrated on 5 December at Waiwhakareke with over 60 volunteers helping this year's plantings get a foot hold by clearing weeds. The day was sponsored by Fonterra and Conservation Volunteers (CV) to celebrate the first year of their Catchment Care programme partnership. Two crews of international volunteers travelled down from Auckland and were joined by a mix of local volunteers, and Fonterra staff volunteering on their day off! Through their efforts approximately 4000 plants form the 2010 Arbor Day planting were released and given a good head start for the 'weedy' Summer months. The volunteers were in good company with some 'superheroes' in their midst. A number of awards were given for outstanding effort by Conservation Volunteers board representative Eddie Morrow. Local volunteer Craig Tehuia received an award for outstanding commitment. Craig has contributed over 73 hours to the Conservation Volunteer – Catchment Care programme. Craig has taken the meaning of commitment to another level, while recently taking on a nightshift job he continued to volunteer during the day! |
