Volunteer

In 2003 when Hamilton City Council agreed to develop Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park on land the city owned, it was nothing but a paddock and a pond. Since then community volunteers have transformed the area with over 4,500 people dedicating 10,000 hours to plant 100,000 seedlings. 6,000 alone were planted in June 2010.

Anyone can become a community volunteer. You can either sign up for one of the organised planting and weed clearance events  or contact the Hamilton City Council Community Planting Coordinator about other opportunities to volunteer.  Which ever option you choose you will need to bring your gumboots along for a morning or afternoon of tree planting and weed bashing!

You can also get your own group together - friends, family, school mates, neighbours or colleagues. Let us know when you can come down and we'll organise something just for you!

Yes! We have our own group

"I did the Carbon Crusade in 2007 and then came back to Waiwhakareke this year for my work Community Day. Everything was  taken care of, we just turned up and did the work. It was such a great atmosphere afterwards. Gerard the planting co-ordinator put some great tunes on over the loudspeakers and we took a tour of our work. He explained how the park was changing, the different plants and animals that were coming to live there each year. I never would have known this kind of thing existed in Hamilton if I hadn't come down. It made me feel like I was really part of something great, that just gets better every year."
